Hi,
I live in SF Bay Area. I got a quote for approx 11700 (includes Radiant Barrier) for presidential vs 13400 for Metal roof. I am trying to find out if Metal roof is better than presidential?
I believe my roof is approx 25 sq ft...(per contractors)
Would appreciate your advise on - Metal vs Asphalt/Composition roof.
Thanks

i know of a metal "decra" roof that is installed over a house i am working on that all it took is for someone to step on a piece to bend it and you get instant leak....i agree with Master "almost any" i like better the look of composition shingles designs ....i would look at the warranties and make my call.....

I treat my decra roofs just like tile. Use underlayment as my roof. The decra for looks.

Shane, can a tile roof be installed watertight? I am wondering because they have been using terra cotta tiles for centuries and didnt have all the new rool goods and kettles we have nowadays.
I know that you do not need any underlayment for a properly installed cedar roof or slate, but modern practices have removed the roofers' skill from the equation in these cases. Is tile telling the same story?

Master we went to repair an S concrete tile roof and when we ran water on it...i was amaze to see that every tile leaked....the water goes in i guess via capillary action on each tile and leaks thru every nail hole...

Thanks for the advise...has anyone heard of Metro Shake II? That is the one he quoted on. Also, the contractor mentioned that there is no need of installing plywood, when a metal roof is used. According to him, the metal roof (or Metro Shake) will be installed on top a 40lb felt.
Is that true?
Thanks,

We have installed metal roofing over skip sheething before. No problems so far. I think it is better for ventilation, anyways.

Ya Master the tiles unless glazed will never be completely water proof. Concrete is porous and clay is also but less.
