2nd Layer Shingle - Florida

I have a roof that is about 10 years old and in good shape. The four hurricanes caused some shingle damage, which I have repaired, but no felt damage. Due to degradation of the top of the shingle in many areas there are a few areas starting to look a little worn. Since the shingles are still in good shape and there are no leaks I am considering adding a second layer of shingles. Is this acceptable by code in the state of Florida? Ripping off the existing roof and reroofing is an option but knowing that it is weather protected now, and am considering primarily for aesthetic reasons, wouldn't a second layer make more sense and would be quite a bit easier? What are your thoughts?

By code you are allowed to ad a 2nd layer but I wouldn't recommend it. You will pay for that extra layer later. Also I dont warranty any roof where I dont see the deck. Also with hurricanes you get lifting of your roof. Are you comfortable that it is nailed securely? We renail all roofs after tear off to code for this very reason. To answer your question yes. It also decreases the life of your new roof.

Its alright Q What you said is true if the dryins were not as good as they should be. Our dry ins are 30# felt with 4" overlaps and nailed every 6" on the seams and 12" in the center with tin tabs and coil nails. With 2 layers there is more of a chance for the shingles to not be secured properly ie. rotted decking..ect.
