I am a homeowner in the Kansas City area and am currently taking bids on a re-roof. Which valley type should I go with? I have received bids on both kinds so far.

I like to install aluminum and copper w valleys on most homes. They are bulletproof when installed correctly. It is worth the extra money when the valley fails normally first. Get around 3 or 4 more years from it.

In the past 3 years or 150 or so homes I've roofed the valleys were installed with 20in wide 26 guage galvanized roll metal and california cut.

The last thing I like to see on a roof in the blazing sun is a shiny valley up on a roof especially on a black roof, really sticks out like a sore thumb.

Most all builders in the Twin Cities have switched from W to the roll valley but when installed properly both are as effective as each other.

The only time I'd recommend the W over the roll would be on a home that gets lots of pine needles on it.

Is the "closed-cut" valley the same as a "California Cut" and rolled valley?

Yes, but there is also weaved valley which looks good only if done right. Over time however I've noticed the shingles can pull away from each other in the valleys and start lifting up and look like an eye sore. Over the years I may have weaved a couple 1-2ft valleys.

Here in my area we don't do open cut valley's. I have torn off roofs with them and everytime the customers have requested that we run them where the bottom is weaved then the lower slope goes under and steeper goes over. This also can vary by the pitch with the most water flow. Pretty confusing to explain. Some company's put metal in some put ice and water some put 90 pound and others use felt. I would recomend you go with what is recomended by the manufacturer of the material. I honestly don't know if open cut vally's are ok in the manufacturer's eyes. I have never really looked into it. Mostly just do it how I was taught.

i dont like metal valleys , here in san diego they are a problem with pineneedles and stuff.... always there are leaks due to debree collecting in it, but like pride said any valley type will perform well if installed correctly

The most important question............what type of shingle are you using? Some manufacturers require closed cut on the lighter weight shingles for the enhanced warranties. GAF, for instance, requires closed cut for timberlines and their 3 tabs, while slatelines and the other super heavyweights will not conform to the valley profile without bridging.

I like california cut. just a preference. Read the back of the shingle wrapper.
