If you guys could just give me a few tips and give me basic instructions about how to install a cedar shake roof, that would be grand. I already have all the materials I need, I just need to know how to install the roof.

I say....start from the bottom and work your way up, breaking all bonds and making surethe water is not able to penetreate into the building envelope.

well i normally lay all my shake liner and try to make sure i dont end up with a 2-3 inch row at the ridge, then lay your shakes giving them 11/2 overhang at edge of roof, space shakes 3/8 minimum to 5/8 maximum , make sure adjacent courses joints are offset at least 11/2" .
the rest goes with good roofing practices, i love to do shakes and the smell of cedar too bad their banned here in san diego, its one of the very first roof systems i learned how to do.
Its too much to cover if you dont know how to do it hire a professional.
If you cant then e-mail me pics and stuff and ill help you.
I really hope you are doing your own house and not starting to work for someone, sounds like its going to take a while
good luck , god bless

It's actually for an Eagle Scout project.
Since that one was up, I got all the dimensions from that, I just want to make sure I don't install the cedar shakes in a faulty way.

Go to the cedar shake and shingle bureaus web-site and they show and have guidelines for the proper installation of cedar shake roofs. The guidelines are written by the members who do the installs.
