guys i must have done over 100 osb sheathing jobs and all pass inspection.

ive notice that 99% of the roofers here, dont know the answer an sadly yes my friends me neither, i am ashame, not worhty.

here goes:

when you remove wood shakes down to the skip sheathing, and install 7/16 osb board. Do you have to break the seams on the rafters? or can you lay it with the seams between the rafters as long as it has skip sheathing below it?

i know of a company that always does it without breaking the osb in the rafters , however 1 outta like 500 inspections one inspector came and rather install a 2' piece from rafter to rafter then leave the seam in between.after the osb was done he said we have to break it on them, so the guys ending up cutting every seam to put a 2' piece, now you end up having seam over adjacent seam.
crazy!!!

it has been my understanding till this date that you only have to break the plywood on the rafters when you go directly on them, and not when you have skip sheathing.

INspector says it is so, then it is so. I have always insisted on going to the rafters, even with plywood over skip. What would there to guarantee you dont pull the skip up when the plywood curls from lack of attachement?

I see its the right thing to do , i agree.
but think of the waste of plywood, Master between you and me i have tryed to pull the plywood even after is nailed to the skip between the rafters and freaking thing is in there good, i dont see it curling up, maybe from not beign vented properly, but not from lack of attachement. i have a hard time doing it with a nail puller.

thing is 499 more or less inspectors didnt care.
just one care.

i am not for what the inspector say so much, since its one against 400+ i want to know the real way to do it, or is it just by code?

osb is particle board just to fill the gaps to provide a nailing substrate for the shingles not for support.

you see what i am saying??

are you really going to load up 20 sheets more , do all that extra work , create more delay and debree, just because one inspector out of 500 said so??

i have passed many inspections like that and i havent had any complaints, inspectors care more about the number of nails, and proper heat pipes clearance. and of course you paying the permit.

but i dont know that is why i am asking??
i am just trying to clear it once and for all.
thanks Master

ok check it out guys, i went straight to the source with the county inspectors.

i call and said:

" Good morning, i had a question i am doing a re-sheathing job that you will inspect tomorrow and i know codes keep changing. is it necessary to break every seam on the rafters even over skip sheathing???"

inspector said:

"mmmmmmm........ that is a very good question.... hold on a sec."

another inspector picks up the phone and said:

"yes, there is no problem just make sure to put enough nails"

Inspector says so , then it is so. ill take your advice Master

i was doing all sorts of reading about it and the way it looks by code it's almost opinion. It says several times "Over SOLID sheathing" and etc... I guess it's all a matter of translation. hope you get that inspector next time
