Roof Over Architectural Shingles?

Greetings. I have what I hope is a simple question to pose. I recently purchased an older home that needs a moderate amount of work, including a new roof due to a couple of leaks and worn shingles. It has a single layer of architectural shingles, a bit of moss in a few places and a some of the shingle tabs are slightly curled at the edges-
I was told by the first roofing contractor that it's not feasable to roof over architectural shingles due to the uneven nature of the tabs and that a tear-off is mandatory. Is this correct? Is there not a reliable way to roof over architectural tabs that will provide a relatively smooth and leak-free cover? I'd much rather find a solution that doesn't include a tear-off. Any advice you good people could provide is very appreciated...

I am 100% wit the guy that said not to do it. THe shingles are thick in some areas, and lees so in others, which creates a problem known as "bridging" This is when the dimension of the original shingles do not allow the new shingles top lay flat, and when nailing (even hand nailing) you can, and most likely will blow through the shingles youre installing, leaving leak holes and a weakened wind resistance.
Do it right...tear it off. Why do you not want to tear off?

i am with Master 100%.
hey guys that is a good question, about the moss, if you just recover over it does it just die? or does the new roof protec it from the sun???, i dont think it stays alive in there does it??

definitely not worth doing it i live out in massachussetts and laying over architect shingles is actually against code out here besides a 3 tab shingle is thin and it would eventuall for to the shape of the acrchy underneath and thats just ugly not to mention heavy a 3 tab shingle is like 2 shingles in one with the weight and with 1 layer of architect and one layer of three tab you have one hell of a weight on you roofing beams i would have to agree with my fellow colleages on this on rip it and save yourself a massive head ache
