Hip Roof, Zero Eaves And Ventilation

We have a hip roof with two shorter hip roof sections, all with no eaves and with a 970-square foot attic floor. When reroofing, the previous owner had an 8 ft. ridge vent installed on the taller hip roof portion but no intake vents anywhere. Online research has indicated that intake vents are necessary to have an effective, passive attic ventilation system. Also indicated is that one intake vent should installed on each of the four sides when a ridge vent is used for exhaust airflow and there are no eaves. Our roof does not have four straight sides because of the smaller hip roof sections. So...
My questions: Do each of the smaller roof sections need their own intake vent? Will the existing 8 ft. ridge vent exhaust air for those two smaller roof sections, or will they need their own exhaust vent?
Thanks for your input!!!

read the post from pride roofing here:

this should give you an idea of what you need, as far as intake you do need them,if by no eaves you mean you have no soffit vents then you will need some other kind of intake i,ve seen everything up to low profile shingle vents at the bootom of the roof, personaly it makes more sence to me where the air comes from in your home than the amount of vents you install.
hope this helps.

Ok, First thanks a bunch QRFL. Secondly, 8 feet of ridgevent will flow a max of 144 inches. and well there a very few roofs that will work properly with that. GRFL has given you the link i made for proper attic ventilation. There is no such thing is a hip roof with ridgevent vented properly. Due to the reverse gables and many elevation changes it is impossible to use it. Just not enough ridge line. Small ranches like that i like to use solar power vents on either side of the home with the proper amount of intake. Running 60% intake for max cold intake. Another thing you might want to concider is insulation depending on where you are if in northern climates r-49 is your number. If you can send me pic of your home i can help you. Also include the length and width of the home so i can give you a solid number for intake needed.

I agree, Pride. Theree is simply not enough ridge to vent most hip roofs, nor enough field are to install ample turtle venting ot the top of the roof. Although I prefer passive ventilation, on a hip roof the way to go is power, with ample intake. You could possibly vent the fascia?
